HALAJKO ON ARSENAL

Ladies manager Dmitri Halajko has been talking to the Colchester Gazzette about his teams upcoming match at Arsenal this Sunday.

Dmitri Halajko has insisted that his Colchester United Ladies side are not daunted by the prospect of facing FA Women’s Premier League champions Arsenal.

The U’s ladies travel to Borehamwood in Hertfordshire on Sunday, for their FA Women’s Cup fourth round clash against the all-conquering Gunners (kick-off 2pm).

Colchester will come up against some of this country’s most talented players, including England internationals Faye White and Kelly Smith.

Halajko knows only too well the magnitude of the task awaiting the U’s this weekend.

But as they prepare to face Vic Akers’ star-studded side, he believes the U’s should be confident in their own ability.

Halajko told the Gazette: “We would not go there if we didn’t feel that we had a chance of winning.

“If Arsenal decide to rest some of their players or go into the tie thinking that it will simply be a walkover, we will have a chance.

“But we know that if they play to anything like the best of their ability and we’re even half a yard off the pace, it will be very, very difficult.

“We will play our own game and try not to be daunted by the whole occasion.

“We won’t change the way we play just because we’re playing Arsenal.

“We will set up how we do in every match and we need to use this game to build for later weeks and help us plan for the bigger picture.”

CHRISTMAS BONUS

Christmas came early for the Colchester United Ladies this weekend, as there was cause for celebration for the club’s female side.
The Ladies were presented with a cheque for £5,000 from this year’s FA Community Shield fund and then they landed a cracking FA Cup tie against Arsenal after beating Enfield on Sunday afternoon.
Ladies first team coach Steve Bartlett and first team captain Helen Bass were in attendance at the Colchester United’s men’s game against Scunthorpe United on Saturday to receive the cheque from defender Matt Lockwood.
The £5,000 windfall is Colchester United’s share of the overall FA Community Shield fund and the Ladies team are this year’s beneficiaries.
“Colchester United Ladies FC would like to thank the U’s for their continued support,” Ladies manager Dmitri Halajko said.
”Both the past chief executive Marie Partner and the present Steve Bradshaw have always helped out in pushing the Ladies club forward whenever they can.
“Our Ladies club actually plays a higher standard of football (male or female) then any other football team in Essex. However it still relies on subscriptions and registration fees from the players, local sponsorship such as PMS (Terry Sutton) and Mann Group (John Southgate) and a dedicated group of volunteers to run the club.
”Therefore this money is much needed to try and sustain our place in the FA Premier League South.
“With away trips to Newquay, Bath and Bristol the commitment the players show for no financial gain is outstanding. We have one of the small budgets in our league and this money will make a huge difference to the club.”

ENFIELD LADIES LFC 0-1 COLCHESTER UNITED LFC

Colchester United Ladies FC can settle into the Christmas holidays in the sure knowledge they have earned themselves an exciting New Year present. Their 1-0 defeat of Enfield LFC this Sunday means they will travel to Ladies National Premier Champions Arsenal in the FA Cup fourth round proper. The U's ladies fielded a side bolstered by the return of Toni Smith, Kayley Morgan and Ceri Harris. The confidence of a good display against Cardiff City still fresh in their minds it was Colchester who started the brighter, taking the game to the home side with strong runs from winger Kat Parnell causing Enflelds defence problems frorn the outset.

Colchester had the better of the first half, going close on several occasions. Enfield were confined to breaks against the play but at half time though it was still goalless.

The second half ran to much the same pattern with Colchester taking up much of the possession and certainly having most attempts on goal. Free kicks by Laura Guyon and Kate Longhurst narrowly missed opening the score. It was after a change that the breakthrough occurred with the ever hard working Helen Bass being subbed on. A strong run down the right by Bass was followed by an unselfish cross ball into the path of an intelligent and perfectly timed run by Longhurst who struck home without breaking stride.

Colchester held the lead for the remainder of the half and looked comfortable until the final ten minutes when Enfield began to pressure them at the back. U's Goalkeeper Nikkitta Runnacles was forced to make a save one on one and then a last gasp strike by Enfield was scrambled off the Colchester line after which the referee blew for full time. It was a well deserved win for the young Colchester side who will reap their reward at Arsenal Ladies Boreham Wood ground on the 4th January.

After the game U's Ladies manager Dmitri Halajko said. " We have worked hard for this result both in training and during the games leading up to this one. All my players deserve the chance to play Arsenal and we look forward to that fixture with relish.

CARDIFF CITY 2-2 COLCHESTER UNITED
After a five week gap due to postponements, Colchester United Ladies resumed their league campaign on Sunday with a long trip across country to Cardiff City. The Welsh side are currently second in the FA Ladies Premiership Southern Division but the Colchester side had come close in their previous meeting this season losing by just one goal at their Wivenhoe home ground.
In bright siunshine and in the shadow of Cardiff City's new stadium the U's started well, pressing the home side and disrupting their pattern of play. Kat Nutman, making her full first team debut for the Colchester Ladies side and Kat Parnell caused immediate problems for Cardiff along both flanks and the opening minutes looked promising for the U's with several attempts on goal going just wide.
It was the home side that broke to score first though with the ball placed wide of Colchester 'keeper Runnacles to put the home side ahead. Colchester kept to their game plan however and eqaulised with a close in strike by the ever reliable Bass, recently returned from injury, wide of the Cardiff Keeper, assisted by the ever hard working Longhurst. The score remained level at half time.
The break saw the introduction of Femy Walker to the U's front line as the Colchester side changed formation in an effort to break the deadlock. It was the home side however that found the back of the net following a defensive mixup and the U's now found themselves behind for the second time in the game. Still pressing forward they were rewarded half way through the second period with a close in strike by defender Hannah Porter, her sixth goal of the season. Despite efforts at both ends the game remained tied at two all on the final whistle.
After the match, U's Ladies manager Dmitri Halajko said, " I felt we deserved at least a point today. We worked hard and could have come away with all three points. We have Enfield in the FA Cup next weekend then two very important League ties at Brighton and Truro over the Christmas period. Its vital we stay focused and take as many points as possible from those ties to move us up the table."
